ARCHIVES ON WHEELS – Powys

Archive on Wheels uses outdoor equipment to bring archive films to rural communities, providing a fascinating insight into events that occured within living memory, showing the countryside and landscape as it was some 50 years ago. The films will be screened in the places that they were filmed, at agricultural shows throughout Powys, Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Below is a small flavour of what you can expect, and the dates below are where we will be touring to:

In a film of Clee Hill in 1978, Peter Green talks to one of the local characters of the hill, Dennis Crowther, well known locally as a country philosopher, wit and songwriter.

Another short clip shows Hope Valley Petrol Station in Minsterley was the first Midlands petrol station to go metric by selling petrol at 20p a litre in 1977. Quite different from petrol prices now!

In a 7 minute film shot in the Shropshire countryside in 1976, Buck Allport (the Shropshire grass cutter) talks to John Swallow about the effects of the drought on the countryside and his philosophy about how to save the countryside by not using chemicals on the land and crops, etc.

So, look out for a big white tent and come inside to discover films from long ago. A huge thank you to the grant from the BFI’s project Britain on Film that made this project possible.
