Following the Fleet: DRIFTERS
Internationally renowned beatboxer and sound artist Jason Singh returns with a major UK tour of his astonishing live vocal score to John Grierson’s groundbreaking 1929 silent documentary Drifters in August/September 2017.
Touring to six former major fishing ports on the UK’s East coast from Scotland to Norfolk, Following the Fleet: DRIFTERS presents Jason’s atmospheric score alongside new artistic interpretations of Britain’s fishing heritage and future, performed live by a diverse range of artists from poets to DJs across the country.
Following the Fleet: DRIFTERS is presented by curator/producer Shona Thomson of A Kind of Seeing. The tour is supported through public funding by Arts Council England. The tour also forms part of BFI Britain on Film, a major project opening up unprecedented online access to our screen heritage. Britain on Film is supported by Unlocking Film Heritage awarding funds from The National Lottery: http://www.bfi.org.uk/britain-on-film.
Complementing Jason’s atmospheric performance will be a rare big screen presentation of archive films of Seahouses from the North East Film Archive and the Old Parish of Bamburgh Local History Archive in the popular community cinema at SeahousesHUB. Through his new live commissioned soundtrack to the films, Northumberland-based singer/songwriter (and professional photographer) Andy Craig brings his historical knowledge of the landscape to explore the transformation of this once thriving fishing village to busy tourism destination.
Andy Craig is a professional photographer and musician who has been inspired by the Northumberland Coast since he moved to the area in 2008. He has an insatiable appetite for learning about the people of his adopted home in Northumberland and the lives they led. His music and photography go hand in hand so it’s an exciting opportunity to experience his music with the visual medium for this special project.
